In China, ABA-oriented programs are the standard of care for autistic children. ISAAC brings naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions (NDBI), which are play-based, child-led, and built into daily routines, to Chinese families and the practitioners who serve them.

The intervention

We adapted NDBI approaches for Chinese children and turned them into an individualized program targeting language, social communication, and adaptive daily-living skills.

I built that program into a 58-hour curriculum for entry-level practitioners and took it through external review. In 2026 the Chinese Association for Mental Health authorized the program.

  • Curriculum modules: language, social, adaptive daily living
  • 100+ practitioners trained to date
  • Individualized goals for each child, reviewed on a fixed cycle

The research

ISAAC is the applied arm of a research program at the Chinese PLA General Hospital and Beijing Normal University. I designed the protocol for a randomized controlled trial comparing NDBI with ABA-oriented intervention. The trial is in progress.

I also led nine researchers across both institutions in writing four Mandarin chapters that introduce NDBI and lay out an intervention plan for China's ASD rehabilitation system.

  • Population: autistic children aged 0–15
  • Arms: NDBI vs ABA-oriented intervention
  • Outcomes: behavioral measures, EEG, and fNIRS

Measurement at NYU Langone, and two seminar papers on how autism intervention works in practice

COSS Short-26 · NYU Langone Health · May – Aug 2025

Can a 26-item scale do the job of a 58-item one?

Clinicians stop filling out long measures, and a measure nobody completes tracks nothing. I tested whether a short form of the Children's Organizational Skills Scale keeps the measurement quality of the full version, in children aged 8–11 (145 enrolled; 64 with pre and post data). It tracks the full form closely and keeps most of its sensitivity to treatment change, at less than half the length.

Autism Interventionists' Conceptualization and Operation of Spontaneity across Global Contexts

How do autism interventionists respond when a child does something unplanned?

Interviews with three early-intervention practitioners in the US and China, analyzed through Moreno's concept of spontaneity. All three read the child first, decide in a second whether to follow or redirect, and rely on a judgment that no fidelity measure captures and no training taught.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) in Social Communication Development for Autistic Children

How does AAC shape social communication in autistic children?

AAC research mostly targets requesting. Reviewing the social side, the evidence suggests AAC works structurally rather than instructionally: lowering expressive demands lets children initiate and reciprocate in ways direct teaching doesn't reliably produce.

  • Secured program authorization from the Chinese Association for Mental Health (2026) for an NDBI-based early intervention curriculum after external review.
  • Converted the research protocol into a 58-hour practitioner curriculum spanning language, social, and adaptive daily-living modules; trained 100+ practitioners.
  • Designed the protocol for an RCT comparing NDBI with ABA-oriented intervention for children aged 0–15, with EEG and fNIRS outcome measures (in progress).
  • Led 9 researchers across two institutions in authoring 4 Mandarin chapters introducing NDBI and an intervention plan for China's ASD rehabilitation system.
  • Led design of the clinical platform the program runs on, now in pilot at 5 partner institutions.
  • Built PM Agent, a conversational agent that converts feedback from pilot-site leads and test users into product requirements.
